By waiting until 1936, the Academy missed the chance to award Boris Karloff an Oscar for his brilliant work as the Monster in
Frankenstein, though they probably wouldn’t have done so.
SPOILER WARNING for the Youtube clip: If you haven’t seen Mister Roberts, this is the ending of the film. Go see it. Then play this.
As I mentioned in the Introduction, Supporting Actor has a strange relationship with Best Picture. 44 Best Pictures have been nominated for Best Supporting Actor, but only 15 have won. All three films with 3 Supporting Actor nominations went on to win Best Picture (On the Waterfront, The Godfather, The Godfather Part II), but the first two lost Supporting Actor. Of the 4 films to both win Supporting Actor and get a second nomination, two won Best Picture (Ordinary People and Terms of Endearment) and the other two were nominated (The Last Picture Show and Julia). On the Waterfront, The Godfather Part II, Peyton Place, Tom Jones and The Last Picture Show are the only films to get 4 Supporting nominations. Peyton Place and Tom Jones both lost all 4, while Last Picture Show won in both categories.
Supporting Actor is also the acting award least likely to be won by a film when its the only nominee – just 4 times, and only once in the last 40 years (City Slickers).
More trivia about the nominees themselves will be with Part II tomorrow.
Honor Roll: The Best Man
Shame Roll: none
Grades (36-69 only): Winners: B / Nominees: B- / Seen: 93.53% 98.82% (all but A Medal for Benny and The Bold and the Brave)
(blue won Best Picture, red was nominated for Best Picture and purple received just the one nomination)
(because Academy rules limit an actor to 1 nomination in a category, if someone appears twice in my top 5, I list their second performance as “also for” to get to the 5 actors without knocking out a worthy performance)

Cary Grant a supporting actor in The Philadelphia Story? He’s definitely a lead in my book.
Very nice to see such love for Claude Rains – it’s a major shame that he never won an Oscar.
My other favourite actor never to win despite four supporting actor nominations (and one for best actor) is Arthur Kennedy. As well as all those near-misses, I think he deserved the award for Bend of the River and The Man From Laramie – neither of which he was nominated for!
Looking forward to the rest of your selections!

The line between Supporting and Lead can be quite tricky. My one rule is that if someone was nominated by the Academy, it goes in that category (thus I will consider Kate Winslet a lead in The Reader even though almost no one else does). Other than that, I try to go by how I feel the role is in relation to the rest of the movie. Cary Grant was a star, but it always felt like his role wasn’t as important as Hepburn or Stewart’s roles. Another example would be the Toshiro Mifune roles in Rashomon and Seven Samurai (I consider that there are no leads in Rashomon and that Takashi Shimura is the lead in Seven Samurai).
And I can’t believe that Walter Brennan has three Oscars and that Claude Rains never won an Oscar. It’s ridiculous.

Thanks. I agree, it can sometimes be a fine line. I too feel that Kate Winslet is a lead in The Reader – I think the Academy (and BAFTA) got it right.

Nice. I agree about 1950 being tough; I personally would have given it to Welles.
I also would have pushed for Mifune in 1963 and Matthau in 1966.

No Melvyn Douglas in ’63? ‘High and Low’ and ‘Captain Newman’ must be pretty damn good.
