Metacritic vs RT – The Most Surprising Differences

Metacritic is a much more nuanced website than Rotten Tomatoes.  It tells you how good critics think the film is as opposed to what percentage of critics simply recommend it.  So, there can be quite a range in differences from RT.  For instance, both Little Women and Spanking the Monkey earn a 91 from RT but the former, with a lot of really positive reviews has an 87 on metacritic and the latter which critics thought was good but not great has a 66.  That’s a 21 point difference on metacritic for films with the same RT score but easy to explain.  The examples below are less easy to explain (although, of course, part of it is that metacritic is also much more selective with its critics).

  • The Mask
    • 77 on RT, 56 on metacritic
  • The Santa Clause
    • 74 on RT, 57 on metacritic
  • Dumb and Dumber
    • 67 on RT, 41 on metacritic
  • Being Human
    • 50 on RT, 33 on metacritic
  • Natural Born Killers
    • 47 on RT, 74 on metacritic
  • I.Q.
    • 46 on RT, 66 on metacritic
  • Blue Chips
    • 37 on RT, 54 on metacritic
  • The Getaway
    • 33 on RT, 51 on metacritic
  • Love Affair
    • 30 on RT, 55 on metacritic
  • The Favor
    • 27 on RT, 51 on metacritic
  • Richie Rich
    • 24 on RT, 49 on metacritic
  • Airheads
    • 21 on RT, 46 on metacritic
  • Renaissance Man
    • 17 on RT, 44 on metacritic

The IMDb

Top 10 Films – IMDb voters

  1. The Shawshank Redemption  –  9.3  (#1)
  2. Pulp Fiction  –  8.9  (#8)
  3. Forrest Gump  –  8.8  (#13)
  4. Leon  –  8.5  (#30)
  5. The Lion King  –  8.5  (#34)
  6. Grave of the Fireflies  –  8.5  (#50)
  7. Endgame  –  8.6
  8. Satantango  –  8.5
  9. Hoop Dreams  –  8.3
  10. To Live  –  8.3

note:  The reason Endgame is listed below films with a higher rating is that its low number of votes on the IMDb keeps it out of their Top 250.  The last two films are in order by most votes (In the Heat of the Sun is also at 8.3 but with lower votes).

Bottom 10 Films  –  IMDb Voters

  1. Twogether  –  4.4
  2. Exit to Eden  –  4.2
  3. American Cyborg: Steel Warrior  –  4.2
  4. Deadfall  –  4.0
  5. Double Dragon  –  3.7
  6. Mr. Write  –  3.7
  7. Inevitable Grace  –  3.4
  8. Car 54, Where Are You  –  2.5
  9. Street Fighter  –  3.9  (#93)
  10. Police Academy 7: Mission to Moscow  –  3.6  (#64)

note:  The bottom two films are listed last because they actually appear (thanks to significantly more votes than the other films on the list) on the IMDb’s Bottom 250.

Best Film by my Ranking vs RT

  • ****  –  Red  /  The Scent of Green Papaya  (100)
  • ***.5  –  The Bride with White Hair  (100)
  • ***  –  Satantango  (100)  *
  • **.5  –  And God Spoke  /  Totally F***ed Up  (100)

  • *.5  –  Dumb and Dumber  (67)
  • *  –  Love & a .45  (83)
  • .5  –  Cabin Boy  /  Ace Ventura  (46)

note:  There are actually 12 films I give *** to that have a 100 score on RT.  None of them were major U.S. releases – nine were Foreign language, two were British and one was a documentary.  Satantango is the best of them.

Worst Film by my Ranking vs RT

  • ****  –  Death and the Maiden  (84)
  • ***.5  –  The Hudsucker Proxy  (56)
  • ***  –  Blue Chips  (37)
  • **.5  –  Radioland Murders  (24)
  • **  –  Golden Gate  (0)
  • *.5  –  The Next Karate Kid  (7)
  • *  –  House Party 3  (0)
  • .5  –  A Low Down Dirty Shame  (0)

note:  Actually seven films earned a .5 from me and a zero from RT but A Low Down Dirty Shame was the biggest at the box office.

Ten Biggest Differences between metacritic and my list (positive)

These subtracts the metacritic score from my score.  These films all rank higher with me than with metacritic.  Ties go to the film with the higher score from me.

  1. The Hudsucker Proxy  –  30
  2. Ed Wood  –  28
  3. Wyatt Earp  –  25
  4. Guarding Tess  –  24
  5. The Adventures of Priscilla  –  23
  6. Clerks  –  21
  7. Leon  –  20
  8. Interview with the Vampire  –  19
  9. Death and the Maiden  –  18
  10. The Shawshank Redemption  –  17

note:  Grief, at a 41, is the only film with the same score from metacritic and my list.

Ten Biggest Differences between metacritic and my list (negative)

  1. Speed  –  -25
  2. Cobb  –  -25
  3. Renaissance Man  –  -27
  4. Timecop  –  -29
  5. The Getaway  –  -30
  6. Richie Rich  –  -30
  7. Ace Ventura: Pet Detective  –  -32
  8. Reality Bites  –  -36
  9. Surviving the Game  –  -37
  10. It Could Happen to You  –  -39

note:  I’m not necessarily alone on all of these.  Two of them (Cobb, The Getaway) have the same rating from Ebert as they do from me and three others (Renaissance Man, Ace Ventura, Reality Bites) have only marginally higher ratings from Ebert that are still lower than the metacritic score.
