Aside from Walt Disney, who used to rack up nominations in the Short Subjects categories, the two most nominated people in Oscar history are Alfred Newman and John Williams. And they were both dominant for long periods of time. With my point system, Newman is the highest ranked composer in the 30’s, 40’s and 50’s, and John Williams in the 70’s, 80’s, 90’s and 00’s. Elmer Bernstein slipped in during the 60’s as Newman did less work and Williams was getting started. But the two of them account for 90 nominations between them. The only person even close is the distant third place person, Max Steiner, who received a Best Score nomination each of the first 17 years the award existed. It also remains the only technical category beside Editing that has had at least one Best Picture nominee every year.

There has also been some back and forth with the category. It has changed names, been divided up, been re-combined. When it was broken up by genre it made sense; at other times it was divided roughly into Original and Adapted, but sometimes the same score would get nominated in both categories. When original Musicals started to die out in the 60’s, they changed it from genre divisions to Original and Adapted, but that was eventually dropped as so few films qualified for the latter. In the mid-90’s after animated Disney films won the Oscar 4 times in 6 years, they split it into genre divisions again, which they dropped a few years later because the Disney films had seen a severe decline and there was no longer a worry about them dominating the category (the Pixar films have landed 4 nominations since the re-merger but have yet to win though Up has a considerable shot this year). Since the abolishment of the short-lived Comedy Score in the 90’s, a category has existed for Best Musical, but there have never been enough eligible films to actually give the award out.

Aside from Best Foreign Film, this is the category where a film is most likely to make a single appearance. 194 films over the years have been nominated for Best Score, and nothing else, including a whopping 81 during the 9 year stretch from 1937-1945 when there was apparently no limit on how many films could be nominated for it. According to Inside Oscar, during these years every studio was guaranteed a nomination simply by submitting an entry.

Interestingly enough, it is also the category where a nominee is least likely to earn one nomination and never be nominated again.  Of the 735 nominations in this category, they have gone to only 269 different composers and only 88 of them received a single nomination (and lost).  And even that has been much less prevalent these days.  Only 7 composers in the last 20 years have received a single Oscar nomination, lost, and never been nominated again.  This is where the heavy hitters come out to play.  My point system for Score is a little different, in that I give 50 for the win and 25 for the nomination, but only 20 for Adapted or Song Score and 10 for the nomination.  But here are the leaders:

  1. Alfred Newman  –  1230 points  (43 nominations, 9 Oscars)  –  45 total nominations (2 for song)
  2. John Williams  –  1050 points  (40 nominations, 5 Oscars)  –  45 total nominations (5 for song)
  3. Max Steiner  –  700 points  (24 nominations, 3 Oscars)
  4. Morris Stoloff  –  525 points  (18 nomination, 3 Oscars)
  5. Victor Young  –  500 points  (19 nominations, 1 Oscar)  –  22 total nominations (3 for song)
  6. Miklos Rozsa  –  475 points  (16 nominations, 3 Oscars)  –  17 total nominations (1 for song)
  7. Jerry Goldsmith  –  450 points  (17 nominations, 1 Oscar)  –  18 total nominations  (1 for song)
  8. Dimtri Tiomkin  –  435 points  (14 nominations, 3 Oscars)  –  22 total nominations, 2 total Oscars  (8 nomination, 1 Oscar for song)
  9. Ray Heindorf  –  430 points  (18 nominations, 3 Oscars)
  10. Franz Waxman  /  Alex North  –  350 points each  (12 nominations, 2 Oscars for Waxman and 14 nominations for North with 15 total nomination for North – 1 for song)

Alex North is the most frustrated, with 15 nominations without a win (including one for the music to “Unchained Melody”) while Dimtri Tiomkin is the best song composer of the bunch, earning the most nominations and the only Oscar (for “Do Not Forsake Me”) for Best Song.  But a special note of triumph to the Newman family.  Between Alfred Newman, his brother Lionel, his son Thomas and his nephew, Randy, in the Best Score categories, they have amassed 10 Oscars out of 69 nominations, and overall, including Best Song (where they have all been nominated at least once), they have a total of 11 Oscars and racked up 85 nomination.  Lionel was nominated 9 times for Score, winning once (and twice for Song), Randy and Thomas are both winless in Score (8 for Randy, 9 for Thomas) and while Thomas only has one Best Song nomination, Randy has 11, including two this year and his only Oscar (“If I Didn’t Have You” from Monsters Inc.).

There are also some other impressive figures about the top composers.  Max Steiner was nominated each of the first 17 years the category existed.  Alfred Newman went from 1937 to 1956, only missing a nomination in 1949 and he was nominated that year for Best Song.  John Williams has had four different streaks of at least five years (the last was eight years, from 1995 to 2001).  In 1939 and 1940, Victor Young received 4 nominations each year and didn’t win any of them.

There is no question who my top composer is.  While Max Steiner and Ennio Morricone each earn 4 Nighthawk Awards, it is John Williams who blows everyone else away.  He earns my Best Score Award 10 different times and he even comes in 2nd place 9 other times.  Overall, he earns 26 total nominations from me (and he wrote the music for all three ringtones in use on my phone).

By waiting until 1934, the Academy missed out on the chance to honor City Lights or King Kong for their magnificent scores. Or anything else, as neither of those films received any nominations.

Also, Limelight was originally released in 1952, but didn’t play Los Angeles until 1972, finally becoming eligible. Neither of these things can happen today – films can be no older than January 1 of the previous year, and if a nominee is declared ineligible then the category will proceed with only four nominees.
