The award for Best Sound started in 1930, the first category to be added. It can be a hard award to explain to people as often big special effects movies win, when people complain that there is too much noise. Yet, sound can be an important part of the film. Not just the sounds of musical instruments or machines of war (two genres that often win), but things like the sound of typewriters in a crowded newsroom, or the sound a plane makes when it breaks the sound barrier, or even the sound a dinosaur or giant ape would make when walking.
Since 1959, it has been a consistent nomination for the Best Picture winner (19 wins and 14 other nominations in 49 years). Before that, however, it was almost non-existent for the Best Picture (2 wins and 6 other nominations in 31 years). For 45 years no film won Best Sound if that was its only nomination, then it happened twice in 5 years (Bird in 1988 and Last of the Mohicans in 1992) and hasn’t happened since. In fact, Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen is the first film to get Best Sound as its only nomination since The Mummy in 1999.
Top Sound Mixers:
- Kevin O’Connell – 400 points (20 nominations)
- Douglas Shearer – 380 points (14 nominations, 5 Oscars)
- John Livadary – 360 points (16 nominations, 2 Oscars)
- Nathan Levinson – 340 points (16 nominations, 1 Oscar)
Kevin O’Connell is the saddest case so far in Oscar history, with a record setting 20 nominations without an Oscar. Three times he has been nominated four consecutive years and from 1995 to 1998 he received 6 nominations without ever winning. The other three top mixers were all from the Studio Era and all three were nominated every single year from 1935 to 1945. They all would perhaps have more nominations and Oscars, except in 1931 and 1932, no films were chosen, only Studio Sound Departments, and from 1947 to 1950 and again in 1967 and 1968, the Oscar was given to the entire Department rather than the head of the department. All three are of some note. Douglas Shearer, brother of Oscar winning actress Norma, was the first person to win three Oscars, winning his third in 1936. John Livadry was nominated for 12 consecutive years (1935-1946) and didn’t finally get an Oscar until that 12th consecutive nomination. Nathan Levinson holds the record with 13 consecutive nominations, from 1933 to 1945, which includes three nominations in 1933. From 1935 to 1943, Livadry and E.H. Hansen were nominated every year and they both lost every year, and for the first seven of those years, Levinson also was nominated and lost.
As a result of the changes in the late sixties, with first going from the studio head as the nominee, then the studio itself, then finally nominating the actual sound mixers, there is a clear demarcation point in 1969. No one nominated before then was nominated again afterwards. This opened things up quite a bit. Up until 1966, there had 231 Oscar nominated films for Best Sound and only 46 different nominees. For the 205 nominated films since, there have been 236 different nominees. Part of that is the crediting of multiple mixers and part is just that there are more people involved than simply the studio heads. Of those original 46 nominees, only 11 received just 1 nomination and there were numerous years where the same people were nominated over and over again.
Grades: Winners: A- / Nominees: B- (mainly because of the tendency to push Best Picture nominations into double digits with an undeserved nomination – examples of films that reached 10 nominations because of what I feel is an undeserved nomination for Best Sound are The Life of Emile Zola, How Green Was My Valley, The Apartment, Anne of the Thousand Days, On Golden Pond, Tootsie and Braveheart).

It should be noted that no film has ever WON Sound and LOST Sound Editing. Sure, there have been times when the two categories went to different films, but in every example, the Sound winner was not nominated for Sound Editing that year.
Everyone knows about the Kevin O’Connell curse–he’s been nominated 20 times in this category, but never won (1/3 of those nods were for Jerry Bruckheimer films).
But nobody talks about the Gene Hackman curse. Hackman films have been nominated a whopping 13 times in this category (including “The Conversation”, Picture winners “French Connection” & “Unforgiven” and 5 other films that won technical Oscars) but have never once won this award.

Actually, back when it was still called Sound Effects, In the Heat of the Night won Best Sound and lost Best Sound Effects.

Mea culpa, right you are. :) Still, not a single incident since then–not a bad 40-year streak.

Wow, I was going to watch The Silence of the Lambs right now, for me Anthony Hopkin’s role is one of the best ones I’ve ever seen. The sound of the movie impessed me years ago when I went to the movie theatre (after the award)

The Exorcist has truly great sound. A well-earned Oscar.
Another two films which don’t make either the Oscars or your awards is Let the Right One In and Pan’s Labyrinth. The sound of Eli sucking blood or the Pale Man eating the fairies…freaky and amazing.
As you can tell, I prefer to see horror films win this category if they create some freaky sound effect.

The Filmatelist: in fact, it did happen last year – Slumdog Millionaire won Best Sound Mixing but lost Best Sound Editing to The Dark Knight, which had lost Best Sound to Slumdog. But since 1967 this is the only time this has happened.
I think that Clint Eastwood’s films often have fabulous sound. They sound so naturalistic, and he is not averse to including natural sounds like wind and traffic noise high in the mix. The Gauntlet has terrific sound but unfortunately wasn’t nominated. And I think Unforgiven should have won (though The Last of the Mohicans wasn’t an unworth winner).

Best Sound is actually called Best Sound Mixing nowadays.
