This is the most underrated and under-appreciated of the major technical categories. Some of the worst Oscars ever awarded came in this category to bloated, over-long films that desperately needed editing (namely Titanic but also Around the World in 80 Days and How the West Was Won). On the other hand, good, crisp editing can do incredible things to a film. And for certain films (Memento, The Hours), the editing is what makes the film a coherent whole. Also, it is a key category for Best Picture. Of the 75 Best Picture Winners since the category began, 42% won Best Editing and 88% were nominated, including the last 28 (many observant Oscar fans accurately predicted before the 2005 Oscars that Brokeback wouldn’t win Best Picture because it was lacking the all important Editing nomination). It is the third best indicator behind Director and Screenplay. Also, every year at least two of the nominees have been Best Picture nominees, usually 3, sometimes 4, and once all 5 (2002). Of course, this year, with 10 Best Picture nominees, we again have all 5, interestingly enough, something that never happened back in the previous time with 10 BP nominees.
For a long time, 3 films per decade would get nominated only for Best Editing (except for the 70′s, when it happened 6 times), but no film has been nominated just for Best Editing since 1995. It has the third lowest rate of any category behind Picture and Director (only 22 of 380 nominees). The only film to win the Oscar for Best Editing with no other nominations was the initial winner, Eskimo in 1934.
Of the 77 films with 10 or more nominations, a whopping 68 of them were nominated for Best Editing. Oddly enough, even though from 1950 to 1998 only three films won Best Editing without a Best Picture nomination (Grand Prix, Bullitt, Who Framed Roger Rabbit), it’s happened three times in the last decade (The Matrix, Black Hawk Down, The Bourne Ultimatum).
A short list of the Best Editing in the history of film would be the following (in chronological order): Battleship Potemkin, Citizen Kane, Rashomon, 2001: A Space Odyssey, The French Connection, The Godfather, Raiders of the Lost Ark, Lone Star and Memento.
The best Editing of 27-33 would have been Battleship Potemkin, Metropolis, Nosferatu, All Quiet on the Western Front, City Lights, Vampyr and M.
Of all the categories, Editing is the least dominated by a couple of strong artists. It is the only category besides Sound Editing (which came into being 30 years later and for years only had two or sometimes even one nominee) that has yet to have anybody reach 10 nominations. There are three people who have tied with the most nominations: Michael Kahn, William H. Reynolds and Barbara MacLean with 7 nominations each. Kahn has the most points, with 250, because he’s won 3 Oscars. Reynolds is tied for second in points with 225, having won 2 Oscars. He is tied with Martin Scorsese’s long-time editor, Thelma Schoonmaker, who also has 3 Oscars, but has only 6 nominations. The others with 3 Oscars are Daniel Mandell and Ralph Dawson, who won three of the first five Best Editing awards, then waited 16 years before his fourth and final nomination (which he lost).
Of all the technical categories, Editing is the place where someone is most likely to have only one nomination. Of the 280 different editors who have been nominated, 149 of them have only been nominated once, and lost while another 27 have been nominated just once, but won. This is also where Directors might show up with an extra nomination. Robert Wise an Oscar nominee before he won his directing Oscars and Hal Ashby was an Oscar winner before his directing career. James Cameron was one of the winners for the Titanic Oscar (and is nominated again for Avatar) and David Lean and the Coen Brothers (through their pseudonym of Rodrick Jaynes) have also been nominated.

Great, now Tonight is stuck in my head. And now that I think about it, I really should have noticed that Hepburn and Wood were dubbed by the same person when I first saw this.

If U think that The Bear is not one of the best edited movies of 1989, then U totally lose Your credibility, man.
